DESCRIPTION:\n\nThe Flinn Foundation Buffmire Lecture in conjunction with M
 ini-Medical School\n\nThe&nbsp\;Flinn Foundation&nbsp\;Buffmire Lecture Se
 ries is made possible through a grant from the Flinn Foundation\, and brin
 gs renowned medical educators and practitioners to Arizona. Twice a year\,
  Buffmire joins forces with&nbsp\;Mini-Medical School\, the UA College of 
 Medicine – Phoenix’s community outreach event.\n\nFrom Boston and Phil
 adelphia to Chicago and Los Angeles\, our nation’s flagship public hospi
 tals are disappearing in a sea of apathy and red ink.\n\nThe dramatic impa
 ct of these closings upon the poor and medically underserved has raised a 
 series of troubling questions: Is this trend irreversible? Are these hospi
 tals worth saving? If so\, are there models of success we can look to for 
 guidance and inspiration?&nbsp\;\n\nThis lecture will seek to chart a posi
 tive future for America’s vital public safety net hospi tals\, using exa
 mples that appear to be working well in the 21st century.\n\nPresenter:\nD
 avid Oshinsky\, PhD&nbsp\;\nDirector of the Division of Medical Humanities
  at the New York University School of Medicine and a professor in the NYU 
 Department of History. He graduated from Cornell University and received h
 is PhD from Brandeis University. His many books have received various awar
 ds including the Pulitzer Prize in History. Under Dr. Oshinsky’s directi
 on\, the Division of Medical Humanities won a multi-million dollar grant f
 rom the Rudin Foundation to sponsor year-long fellowships for medical stud
