SUMMARY:Mini-Medical School: Diagnostic Test - The Future of Mental Illness
  - Health Sciences Education Building C104 - 5 Sep 18 17:30
DESCRIPTION:&nbsp\;\n\n\n\n\n&nbsp\;\n\n\n\n\n\nTHE MINI-MEDICAL SCHOOL WOM
EN IN MEDICINE AND SCIENCE SERIES\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe University of Arizona C
ollege of Medicine – Phoenix proudly organizes&nbsp\;Mini-Medical School
\, a fascinating community lecture series open to the public.\n\nSeptember
is Women in Medicine and Science Month\, an initiative developed by the A
merican Medical Association. The College is celebrating female scientists\
, physicians and faculty who mentor\, advocate\, network and offer trainin
g and development to female students and researchers.\n\nAmelia Gallitano\
, MD\, PhD\, is a physician-scientist whose goal is to improve the treatme
nt of mental illnesses. At Mini-Medical School\, Dr. Gallitano will share
how difficult this task can be\, considering there is no biological test t
o diagnose a mental illness such as schizophrenia or post-traumatic stress
disorder.&nbsp\;\n\nPart of the problem is that psychiatric illnesses are
thought to be caused by genetics and environmental factors.\n\nAttendees
will learn how Dr. Gallitano leads a laboratory that investigates a family
of genes activated in the brain in response to environmental events. Thes
e genes are ideally poised to explain the risk for mental illness.&nbsp\;\
n\nDr. Gallitano is the interim chair of the&nbsp\;Women in Medicine and S
cience Committee&nbsp\;and an associate professor in the&nbsp\;Departments
  of&nbsp\;Basic Medical Sciences&nbsp\;and&nbsp\;Psychiatry.\n\nWhen: \nWE
