SUMMARY:Mini Medical School - Good Bacteria - Bad Bacteria - Health Science
 s Education Building C104 - 7 Nov 18 17:30
DESCRIPTION:The University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix proud
ly presents Mini-Medical School\, a fascinating community lecture series o
pen to the public.\n\nThe fall series continues the Celebrating Women in M
edicine and Science theme\, an initiative founded by the American Medical
Association. The College highlights women scientists\, physicians and facu
lty who mentor\, advocate\, network and offer training and development for
students and researchers.\n\nBreakthrough Research\nVirtually all cervica
l cancers are caused by HPV\, or human papillomavirus\, dubbed the “comm
on cold” of sexually transmitted infections because nearly every sexuall
y active person catches it. Fortunately\, the immune system vanquishes the
majority of HPV infections\, with only a small percentage progressing to
precancer and\, ultimately\, cancer.\n\nBut why do some people clear the i
nfection while others are unable to fight it?\n\nMini-Medical School atten
dees will learn how Dr. Herbst-Kralovetz leads a team that found as the va
ginal environment loses acidity\, cervical abnormalities become more sever
 e. The team is the first to show a relationship between elevated pH and ad
vanced cervical abnormalities.\n\nDr. Herbst-Kralovetz will share her rese
arch outcomes which explain women without cervical abnormalities are hosts
to different communities of vaginal bacteria than women with cervical can
cer and precancer\, a discrepancy that reveals a relationship between “g
ood” bacteria and cervical health\, and “bad” bacteria and increased
  cancer risk.\n\nPresenter:\nMelissa M. Herbst-Kralovetz\, PhD \nAssociate
Professor\, Department of Basic Medical Sciences/Oncology at the Universi
ty of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix\n\nWednesday\, November 7\,
