 r will be presented by&nbsp\;Jennifer Kehlet Barton\, PhD\, director\, BIO
 5 Institute\, professor\, Biomedical Engineering\, The University of Arizo
na\, Tucson.&nbsp\;\n\n\n\n\nOptical imaging techniques have been shown to
be highly sensitive to early stages of cancer. Barton’s team has examin
ed techniques\, including optical coherence tomography\, fluorescence imag
ing and multiphoton imaging\, in mouse models of ovarian cancer and human
samples of fallopian tube and ovary. These studies suggest that ovarian ca
ncer is detectable at microscopic and macroscopic scales. To implement ear
ly detection in vivo\, a minimally invasive method to reach the ovaries an
d fallopian tubes must be created. The Barton lab is developing endoscopes
that travel a variety of paths through the female reproductive system and
incorporate one or more of the optical modalities.\n\n\n\n\n\n
