AZBio Member Spotlight – ImmunoShield Therapeutics

Based in Arizona, ImmunoShield Therapeutics is working to turn the long-promised curative potential of allogeneic cell therapies into a reality, starting with type 1 diabetes.

What Key Challenge Is ImmunoShield Therapeutics Focused on Addressing?

ImmunoShield Therapeutics is working to turn the long-promised curative potential of allogeneic cell therapies into a reality, starting with type 1 diabetes. Allogeneic, insulin-secreting cell therapies have the potential to restore the body’s natural ability to regulate blood sugar, freeing patients from lifelong disease management. Today, however, they still fall short of lasting, reliable performance in the body and depend on chronic immune suppressive drugs to prevent rejection. ImmunoShield is focused on overcoming these final barriers, developing technologies that enable the cells to function, persist, and thrive long-term without chronic immune suppression. By helping bridge the gap between breakthrough science and real-world cures, ImmunoShield aims to unlock a future where type 1 diabetes is no longer a chronic condition, but a solved problem.

How Significant Is This Challenge?

In the United States alone, more than 1.8 million people live with type 1 diabetes, facing an enormous economic burden estimated at $40 to $50 billion every year and nearly $1 trillion over their lifetimes. A durable, insulin-secreting cell therapy that reduces or eliminates the need for constant monitoring, injections, and chronic immunosuppression could meaningfully lessen the long-term personal and healthcare burden in this space. By enabling broad adoption of these therapies, they can shift resources from perpetual disease management toward interventions that offer lasting health, freedom, and predictability for patients, clinicians, and health systems.

How Is ImmunoShield Therapeutics’ Approach Making a Meaningful Impact?

ImmunoShield is focused on partnering with developers of insulin-secreting cell therapies to help them reach patients safely and at scale. At its core, ImmunoShield’s technology is designed to protect transplanted cells or tissues from immune rejection. They do this by encapsulating therapeutic cells in an implantable, retrievable device and retraining the patient’s immune system to stay neutral to those cells. By rigorously integrating biology and engineering principles, as well as scalable manufacturing and real-world clinical needs into their design process, they are creating a platform built not just to work in the lab, but to succeed in the clinic and reach patients broadly.

How Has Being Based in Arizona Supported ImmunoShield’s Growth?

Being based in Arizona has been a major asset for ImmunoShield. Support for the biosciences here is strong, and as a spinout from Arizona State University, they have experienced firsthand how the state’s innovation ecosystem helps early startups thrive. Backing from ASU, the Flinn Foundation, the Center for Entrepreneurial Innovation, and the City of Phoenix have all played a meaningful role in their progress.

What Does the Future Look Like for ImmunoShield Therapeutics?

Over the next 18 to 24 months, ImmunoShield is entering a very exciting phase. They will be gathering data from their first large animal study, which kicked off earlier this year, and using those results to refine and advance their platform. In parallel, they are preparing to engage directly with the FDA to clearly define their path to the clinic and complete IND-enabling studies. Beyond the lab, they are also elevating their presence and voice, including by working with a marketing team this summer to expand their online footprint and share the impact of what they are building with a broader community.
