Medicine is at a crossroads. Genomic and other -omic generated information provides a greater understanding of the underlying biological defects associated with a particular disease or disorder. Since day one at TGen, their mission has always been to champion the use of -omics driven decisions to prevent, diagnose, and treat disease.

Currently, less than 15 percent of cancer research funding focuses on early detection, even though intervention at the earliest stages dramatically improves a patient’s chance of survival. Using approaches found nowhere else, TGen scientists are looking at ways in which a simple blood screen could detect cancerous cells early. Their goal: Diagnose cancer in the five- to ten-year window, before it becomes symptomatic through molecular diagnostic tests that detect cancer in its earliest stages. Early detection of cancer and its partner —early intervention— will save lives and improve the quality of life for patients.

The Biodesign Institute plays a critical role in advancing the research mission ofArizona State University, a comprehensive metropolitan university that is the second largest in the U.S. The Biodesign Institute embodies the guiding principles of the New American University, as defined by Arizona State University President Michael Crow, specifically, to conduct use-inspired research, fuse intellectual disciplines and value entrepreneurship.

To advance its bio-inspired research mission, the Biodesign Institute has established more than a dozen different research centers, labs and 200 active research projects. Its 65 tenured research faculty, who include one two Nobel Prize winners and four National Academy members, publish in top-tier, high impact scientific journals and collaborate with research and commercial enterprises around the world.

University of Arizona BIO5 Institute — Long-time supporter and graduate of the University of Arizona (UA), Mr. Thomas W. Keating, explains why he chose to invest in the UA's collaborative research vision to help create the BIO5 Institute. Today, scientific breakthroughs come where different disciplines intersect. BIO5 incorporates five different areas of research including medicine, pharmacy, engineering, agriculture, and basic science to encapsulate the power they can make together. The BIO5 Institute also seeks to provide hands-on learning opportunities for university and high school students alike. Mr. Keating discusses the KEYS High School Summer Internship Program, which integrates high school students into actual laboratory settings to give them hands-on research experience. The research discoveries, business start ups, and educational resources that extend from the BIO5 Institute not only boost local, state, and national economy, but also benefit humankind across the globe.
