I.D.E.A. Tempe is a phased development that is focused on bringing new technology companies to Tempe. The 18-acre, 1 million-square-foot project includes five commercial office buildings and hotel, restaurant and retail space and two parking structures. I.D.E.A. stands for Innovation, Discovery, Education and Arts. The campus is located adjacent to Tempe Center for the Arts near Tempe Town Lake, 700 W. Rio Salado Parkway, Tempe. www.tempe.gov/IDEAtempe.

BD is one of the largest global medical technology companies in the world with more than 65,000 employees. The company works to advance the world of health by improving medical discovery, diagnostics and the delivery of care. The Peripheral Intervention business develops, manufactures and distributes medical technology and devices that provide clinical benefits to patients suffering from diseases that affect the vascular system. On July 9, the Peripheral Intervention business announced the acquisition of TVA Medical to advance its leadership in solutions for chronic kidney disease. BD has a presence in virtually every country and partners with organizations around the world to address some of the most challenging global health issues.

“BD is helping us realize the concept of I.D.E.A. Tempe. Our hope for the campus was to bring new jobs and new discoveries to our city. BD will do both. We thank them for expanding their business in Tempe and for being the inaugural business to locate in our IDEA Tempe campus,” Tempe Mayor Mark Mitchell said.

In addition to serving the needs of physicians and patients in the US, approximately 40 percent of BD’s Peripheral Intervention products benefit patients in countries outside the US.  As such, physicians, sales personnel and engineers from around the globe will visit Tempe to understand the medical technologies and products that BD Peripheral Intervention has and to specifically train sales personnel and physicians on their products and the benefits of their medical devices. The BD Peripheral Intervention business continues to add associates at the new facility. Tempe will gain additional business visitors when BD opens its new building and expands its research and technology and training capabilities.

“The new campus concept and the vision that Mayor Mitchell and the City of Tempe had in developing a location focused on attracting companies that are industry leaders will continue to bring innovative solutions to patients and customers globally,” Steve Williamson, Worldwide President of Peripheral Intervention at BD, said. “BD is the first company to partner with the City of Tempe and the Boyer Company on this project. This shows the power of collaboration when local officials and businesses can come together to improve the business climate for the City of Tempe, the surrounding area of Phoenix and the State of Arizona.”

The Peripheral Intervention business at BD will move to the new 185,000 sq. ft., 6-story building at IDEA Tempe, by January 2020. Groundbreaking is expected to begin later this summer.

“We have been in discussions with The City of Tempe for more than three years to assess the viability of being part of the I.D.E.A. Tempe campus. The cooperation we received from the City of Tempe, the ability to attract and retain a diverse, talented and qualified workforce in this area, confirmed our decision to stay in the area and expand our workforce.  We look forward to strengthening our partnership with the City of Tempe and being part of this new campus that provides opportunities to develop innovative and leading-edge products that impact the health care system and patients around the world,” said David Cano, VP, Human Resources of Peripheral Intervention at BD.

Currently, BD employs 550 people in Tempe, and the company currently has an additional 50 positions they are recruiting for, with expectations to hire even more before the new building opens. The jobs within this business are highly skilled, many of them involve marketing, R&D and quality engineering, clinical, regulatory or medical expertise and experience with highly regulated medical products. “We are excited to welcome BD to the I.D.E.A. Tempe development, they are the perfect tenant to kick off this exciting project.  Getting to this point has been a team effort.  We are so appreciative of the support of the City of Tempe, the BD real estate team and our brokerage partners. Additionally, the efforts of our design and construction team of SmithGroupJJR and Okland Construction have been invaluable. We look forward to the successful completion of the BD Tempe building in late 2019,” said developer Matt Jensen of The Boyer Company.

“Having a world-class company like BD anchor I.D.E.A. Tempe is a great start toward building this campus,” Tempe Economic Development Director Donna Kennedy said. “We are pleased to partner with BD, The Boyer Company and Transwestern.”
