Summer education programs focus on high school through college graduate students
PHOENIX, Ariz. — DEC. 13, 2021 — Hannah Fry, a senior studying biological sciences at ASU, had no wet-lab research experience until this past summer when she joined one of the premier summer student programs offered by the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen), an affiliate of City of Hope.
Now, Hannah sees her time as an intern in Helios Scholars at TGen as an essential part of her quest to become a family-medicine doctor, especially building her understanding of translational medicine, the process of moving new discoveries from the laboratory into new treatments for patients.
“That ability to turn your research into something that can actually save lives really resonated with me,” Hannah said. “I want to become a doctor, and so I think it is really important to understand how basic research can improve clinical outcomes.”
More future bioscience researchers and physicians will get that same inspirational opportunity this summer, when TGen hosts 45 undergraduate and graduate college students in Helios Scholars at TGen, and another 20 high school students in TGen Bioscience Leadership Academy.
Applications for both programs open today. The deadline for applying is Feb. 4.
Helios Scholars at TGen is a paid, full-time, 8-week summer internship program starting at $512 per week. Designed for incoming and continuing undergraduate, graduate and medical school students, Helios Scholars at TGen offers a one-of-a-kind summer experience in biomedical research under the mentorship of TGen faculty and staff. The program covers a breadth of research areas as well as professional skills training in writing, networking and presentation methods.
Helios Scholars applicants must: be at least 16 years old by the June 6 start of the 2022 program; be a graduate of an Arizona high school or currently attending college in Arizona; be available to work 40 hours per week (excluding weekends); and be planning to attend college full-time during the Fall 2022 semester. TGen Bioscience Leadership Academy is a 2-week summer program for rising high school juniors and seniors that comes with a $1,000 scholarship. This program allows qualified high school students the chance to explore a variety of careers within biomedical research. Experts share career advice and provide hands-on opportunities that enable students to gain a more in-depth understanding of translational research and the impact it has on clinical trials and precision medicine.
