ON THE HORIZON

HHS announced a November 20th, Public Forum on Pharmaceutical Innovation, Access, Affordability and Better Health.

  • The Forum will consist of five panels that address: the impact of rising pharmaceutical costs; balancing innovation and affordability; patient access; purchasing strategies and utilization management best practices; and value- and outcomes-based purchasing programs.
  • Representatives from multiple stakeholder groups have been invited to participate as panelists and/or attend in-person (though invitations have not yet been made public).
  • BIO was invited to attend the Forum and plans to release a statement in advance that highlights a series of topics that the panelists should consider. We will include this statement in next week’s The Week That Was.

Senate Special Committee on Aging announced a December 9 hearing to investigate pharmaceutical drug pricing, in particular, the increasing cost of generics.

  • BIO is working closely with the Committee as it refines the scope of the hearing, which, based on public statements, may be limited to emerging trends in the cost of generic products and the implications for patient access. From a communications perspective, we will be ready to respond if appropriate.
THREE POINTERS FOR THE WEEKEND
  • Patients with an out-of-pocket expense less than $100 were seven times more likely to fill their prescription than patients with an out-of-pocket cost of $250 or more.
  • Innovative medicines save millions of lives every year and are transforming how we treat and cure disease. Heart disease death rates have decreased 30% from 2001 to 2011.
  • Gains in cancer survival are worth nearly $2 trillion, with a majority of that savings going to patients, families and our economy as a whole.
