Phoenix Children’s Hospital Earns Coveted Top Rating from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons

Arizona’s only “Best Children’s Hospital” is one of just six three-star programs nationwide

PHOENIX (Dec. 19, 2015) – Phoenix Children’s Hospital, a “Best Children’s Hospital” as ranked by U.S. News & World Report, has earned the top rating from The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS), an organization that works to ensure the best possible outcomes for thoracic surgeries.

The Cardiothoracic Surgery Team at Phoenix Children’s is one of six programs in North America and the only physician group in the Western U.S. to receive a three-star rating, signifying that Phoenix Children’s congenital cardiothoracic surgery outcomes are among the best in the country.

“The rating validates the high level of cardiothoracic care we provide to help patients live a full and healthy life,” said John J. Nigro, Co-director, Phoenix Children’s Heart Center – Division Chief, Cardiothoracic Surgery. “This represents another prestigious honor for our Heart Center program, which reinforces our commitment to patient outcomes and clinical excellence.”

Phoenix Children’s three-star rating is based on congenital cardiothoracic surgery outcomes data for the period from July 2011 through June 2014. STS compared data from 116 participating programs and implemented a star-rating system based on overall risk-adjusted operative mortality rates: one star for programs with mortality rates statistically higher than expected, two stars for average mortality, and three stars for lower-than-average mortality rates.

The three-star designation comes on the heels of U.S. News & World Report’s 2015-16 “Best Children’s Hospital” list, which ranked Phoenix Children’s #16 in the nation in Cardiology and Heart Surgery. In fact, Phoenix Children’s was ranked in 9 out of 10 specialties and was the only Arizona hospital to make the list.
