University of Arizona and St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center/Dignity Health sign affiliation agreement for University of Arizona Cancer Center-Phoenix

The University of Arizona has formally affiliated with St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center/ Dignity Health to develop a cancer care program in Phoenix to include a new outpatient clinic at the Phoenix Biomedical Campus and inpatient care at St. Joseph’s Hospital in central Phoenix.

“This formal affiliation is consistent with the University of Arizona’s mission and duty to serve and benefit the entire state of Arizona,” said University of Arizona President Ann Weaver Hart. “The University of Arizona Cancer Center-Phoenix will bring to the Valley research-driven, evidence-based, multi-disciplinary, patient-centric care. In addition to collaborating with St. Joseph’s, we are pleased to have the ongoing support of the City of Phoenix to make this project a reality.”
“As our affiliation with the UA evolves, our cancer services will continue to expand and develop an extraordinary level of specialization,” said Linda Hunt, president and CEO of Dignity Health Arizona. “Through this effort, we are collaborating with talented UA and community physicians, as well as other providers throughout the valley. Patients will now have access to care that is truly exceptional.”
The new cancer center outpatient facility will be constructed at the northwest corner of Fillmore and Seventh streets, with a groundbreaking scheduled for February. The new clinic should be open to patients by early 2015. St. Joseph’s Hospital will operate inpatient clinical cancer services at its main hospital campus and outpatient services at the new facility and at its hospital campus until the new building is open.
The 230,000-square-foot, $100 million cancer clinic will offer comprehensive cancer services, including infusion, radiation oncology, diagnostic imaging, endoscopic/interventional radiology, a breast center, specialized cancer clinics, patient wellness and support services, a prevention/executive health clinic, clinical lab space and other related support spaces.
The University of Arizona Cancer Center is one of just 41 comprehensive cancer centers designated by the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health. It is the only NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center headquartered in Arizona.
