Chairman Cassidy Releases Landmark Report to Modernize FDA, Deliver Lifesaving, Affordable Treatments to American Families

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA), chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, released a landmark report detailing legislative and regulatory reforms to modernize the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). These proposals aim to maintain American biomedical dominance and ensure patients have timely access to the latest lifesaving treatments. The HELP Committee’s recommendations are directly in line with President Trump’s mission to improve the health of American children and families.

“Biomedical innovation holds enormous promise for the American people… But ‘innovation’ is meaningless unless it creates products that actually help patients,” wrote Dr. Cassidy. “While many parts of FDA work well, unnecessary bottlenecks slow patients and consumers getting the products they need.”

“Ultimately, it should be easier to make Americans healthy by empowering them with the tools and information they need to make healthy choices and live better lives,” continued Dr. Cassidy. “The HELP Committee looks forward to coordinating with FDA under its new leadership to promote patient access, accelerate U.S. competitiveness, and improve the health of American families.”

The HELP Committee recommendations to improve FDA include:

  • Delivering affordable, lifesaving cures to patients quicker by eliminating red-tape and increasing predictability in the FDA review process.
    • This includes making it easier to bring low-cost generic drugs to market. In 2024, generics and biosimilars saved American taxpayers an estimated $467 billion.
    • Also, integrating artificial intelligence and other technologies in the review process to expedite approval while still ensuring safety.
  • Ensuring families have safe, healthy foods by strengthening FDA’s Human Foods Program. This is crucial to delivering President Trump’s goal of ending the chronic disease epidemic in America.
  • Keeping lifesaving medical research in America and not Communist China by streamlining clinical trials and encouraging collaboration between FDA and developers.
  • Strengthening FDA’s workforce by incentivizing the best American scientists and experts to serve at the agency.
