Recognizing Leadership – AZBio Leadership Award Winner Dr. Robert Penny

  AZ BioIndustry Association Presents Dr. Penny with Leadership Award

The AZ BioIndustry Association recently   presented Dr. Robert Penny, the   CEO of the International Genomics Consortium, with the 2011 Jon W. McGarity Leadership Award for his vision in advancing cancer personalized medicine and success in leading   the industry.

annual Awards Dinner on October 13th.

 

“In addition to leading in ground-breaking research, Dr. Penny exemplifies the ‘collaborative gene’ that makes Arizona unique. From local collaborations with our nationally recognized health care institutions to statewide partnerships and national bioscience initiatives, Dr. Penny and his team at the International Genomics Consortium are leading the way,” said Joan Koerber-Walker, CEO of the AZ BioIndustry Association.

Dr. Penny was selected for this award for:

  • Delivering $58 million over five years in National Institutes of Health funding for IGC’s leadership roles in The Cancer Genome Atlas project.
  • Creating the Molecular Profiling Institute which developed a critical late-stage cancer test. The IGC later sold the Molecular Profiling Institute in a successful merger.
  • Providing an instrumental role in the recent launch of the Arizona Biosignature Laboratory

“The International Genomics Consortium looks forward to developing molecular biomarkers that will improve the quality of cancer care.  The future of oncology is becoming brighter for patients,” Penny said.   “Thanks to IGC’s Leadership Team, Maricopa County, the Flinn Foundation, and many others for their invaluable   support over the years.”

The AZ BioIndustry Association also named Dr. Penny a finalist for the Award for Research Excellence.

In addition, IGC won a Fast Lane Award for moving the industry forward.
