A panoramic mural, sponsored by the City of Phoenix, greeted over 18,289 biotechnology industry leaders – the most attendees in the last 10 years – from 49 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and 67 countries who gathered at BIO 2018 in Boston. BIO proudly attempted – and set– the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title for the Largest Business Partnering Event with 46,916 one-on-one meetings held during the conference.

National Bioscience Industry Report Shows $2T Economic Impact, Accelerated Venture Capital Investment & Job Growth

A study released at the BIO International Convention shows that the U.S. bioscience industry has reached $2 trillion in annual economic impact while maintaining accelerated venture capital investment and job growth numbers. Among U.S. technology sectors, the bioscience industry has held a leading position as an economic driver and job generator.

UA Receives $1.1M for Study of Genetic Risk Factors for Type 2 Diabetes and Heart Disease

Some people who take statins to lower cholesterol have a slightly higher risk of developing type-2 diabetes. Genetic epidemiologist Yann Klimentidis, PhD, at the UA Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health received a $1.1 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to study the connection between type-2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

2018 Life Sciences Workforce Trends Report

The Coalition of State Bioscience Institutes (CSBI) released the 2018 Life Sciences Workforce Trends Report June 5, 2018 at the BIO International Convention held in Boston, Massachusetts June 4-7. The report provides a national snapshot of the current and anticipated talent needs of the nation’s dynamic life science industry.  AZBio represents Arizona as a member of CSBI.

National Cancer Institute selects ASU to lead revolutionary research in cancer

Arizona State University has been awarded more than $8.5 million over five years from the National Cancer Institute to establish the Arizona Cancer and Evolution Center. The grant will establish ASU as a key player and the hub of an international network of research scientists who are dedicated to understanding cancer in an entirely new way.

Cervical Cancer May Be Driven by Imbalance in Vaginal Bacteria, UA Research Finds

Melissa Herbst-Kralovetz of the University of Arizona Cancer Center and UA College of Medicine – Phoenix has found a direct relationship between “good” bacteria and cervical health and “bad” bacteria and increased cancer risk.
